Porcelain with beach pebble inclusions | Transparent glaze | 2021-2023

A beach pebble is pressed into soft porcelain midway through forming these jars on the potter's wheel. The process becomes unbalanced as the pebble repetitively knocks against the maker's fingers and it takes skill to finish the piece. Through the drying and firing process the porcelain is constantly shrinking, the pebble does not however and cracks appear. Latent geological forces within the pebble begin to exact their will upon the piece. Eventually, through a combination of heat and pressure the Dolerite pebble melts and releases its minerals into the glaze.

These jars explore notions of beauty and perfection. As in the natural world, beauty is often found where there is tension between rugged and soft, pattern and chaos, perfection and imperfection. This balance or tension is often, I find, what gives a piece presence. For me as a maker they are a lesson in unlearning, in relinquishing control, of letting go.
